Description

Jerome F. Shapiro. Atomic Bomb Cinema. The Apocalyptic Imagination on Film. Routledge. 2002. 386 pages. Cloth $95.00. Paper $26.95 In Atomic Bomb Cinema, James F. Shapiro draws on cultural theory (Raymond Williams), Jungian psychology, and genre theory (Alastair Fowler and Stanley Cavell) in order to provide close readings of a number of commercial American and Japanese films from the late 1940s to the present. By discussing these films within the contexts of Jewish apocalyptic traditions in the west and Japanese principles of balance and a devotion to nature, Shapiro finds that productions such as The Time Machine (George Pal, 1960), Waterworld (Kevin Reynolds, 1995), The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (Terry Gilliam, 1989), and many others have provided a useful public discourse about nuclear war. Through his readings, Shapiro gives scholars encouragement for carefully considering the variety of cultural and spiritual voices that speak through commercial cinema. His work convincingly demonstrates that in the midst of an age in which humanity's ability to destroy itself has grown exponentially and our ability to conceive of a stable fut ure grows increasingly dim, popular films suggest that the public response has been both conscious and hopeful.
